William Clayton Woffenden

William Clayton Woffenden, age 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at his home in Winters, Texas. He was born to George Richard (Curly) Woffenden and Arlene Alice Floyd Woffenden on July 27, 1949 in Pierre, South Dakota.

The family moved to Winters in 1959 and Clayton attended Winters schools. In 1965, the family moved to Galveston and at that time, Clayton joined the United States Army. He was stationed first at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, Texas, then Giessen, Germany.

On June 28, 1967, Clayton married Marianne Rocha of Winters in San Angelo. He and Marianne lived in Abilene after Clayton’s military service where he worked various jobs until he started driving truck. They moved to Clovis, New Mexico with three sons where another son was born. He worked for R. W. Steele Trucking hauling cattle and irrigation sprinklers and Jeff Jordy Farms hauling potatoes. Clayton and Marianne then moved back to Winters where he drove truck for Dry’s Manufacturing and worked at the shop at Mueller’s in Ballinger, from which he retired in 2016.

After retirement, Clayton drove a school bus for the Winters schools and performed auto inspections for C & C Enterprise. He was a volunteer fireman in Winters for 24 years and served on the City Council for 5+ years until his death. He was proud to serve his community, but he was most proud of his family his wife Marianne of 55+ years, his four sons, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three nephews, two sisters-in-law, brother-in-law and his best friend and brother-in-law, Ramon Rocha. He is survived by his wife, Marianne, his four sons: Rene and wife Hilda of Winters, grandchildren Holly Woffenden and (Abel Valencia), his great granddaughter, Anabel Valencia of San Angelo; Brittany (Aaron) Perez and great granddaughters Sophia and Arabella Perez of Winters; and Sierra Woffenden of Winters; Marc and wife Alexis and grandson Gavin, of Austin; Chris (Bear), and wife, Tammy and grandchildren, Anna and John of Austin; Lee, and (Tammi Skirvin) of Austin and granddaughter, Sydney Skirven of Arlington. He is also survived by his siblings: Chuck Woffenden of Trent, Texas; Russell and wife Joyce Woffenden of Penrose, Colorado; sister Jeanne Williams of Schertz, Texas; sister Vida Linton of Schertz, Texas; sister Gail and (James Murchison) of Festus, Missouri, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to count.

His greatest joys were spending time with his family, extended family and friends, and riding his Harley-Davison motorcycle. Some of his favorite times were going to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with his sons.

The rosary will be held at Winters Funeral Home at 120 State Street, Winters on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.; funeral mass will be held at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church at 119 W. College, on Friday, September 23 at 11:00 a.m. Interment of his ashes will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Abilene on September 23, at 3:00 p.m. with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Winters Volunteer Fire Department at 310 S. Main, Winters, Texas 79567.

The family wishes to thank Dr. McKinnon, Luke England and Tami Killough at the North Runnels Clinic for their exceptional care of Clayton, and Hospice of Ballinger for their unfailing devotion to Clayton’s transition. Special thanks to Jimmy and Marci Bliss and the Bliss Motel for the kindness, generosity and hospitality shown to the Woffenden family.
