The Grape Creek Eagles stunned defending district champion Ballinger on Friday with a 20-13 win in Grape Creek.

The victory followed Grape Creek's 17-14 win last week over Bangs, last year's runner-up in District 2-3A Division II.

Grape Creek (3-4 overall, 2-0 in district) is now the surprising co-leader atop the district standings with Sonora.

Grape Creek High School's Raymond Saavedra was voted Standard-Times football player of the week for his efforts in Week 3 of the 2021 season.

Grape Creek rushed for 263 yards and held Ballinger to only 119.

Dalton Dillon rushed for 114 yards on 26 carries with his second consecutive 100-yard game to lead Grape Creek's ground game.

Isaiah Briones added 86 yards and two TDs on 13 carries, while Colton Walker had 52 yards and a TD on four carries.

Grape Creek linebackers Collin Humphrey (10 tackles, 3 TFL), Shane Davidson (9 tackles) and Cougar Jetton (7 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 sack) anchored the defense's stellar showing.

Defensive tackle Dante Huerta had 8 tackles, 2 TFL and 1 sack.

Grape Creek will visit Brady next week, while Ballinger (3-3, 0-2) hosts Ingram Moore in what is suddenly a must-win game for the Bearcats' playoff hopes.

Ballinger was flying high after a 35-34 overtime win over Llano three weeks ago, but the Bearcats have stumbled out of the gates with back-to-back losses to start district play.

Ballinger has been without starting quarterback/safety Carter Arrott in both losses after he suffered a collapsed lung in the Llano game.

Backup QB Briley Clinton was again effective through the air as he completed 11 of 20 passes for 122 yards and two TDs. However, Ballinger's running game was nonexistent as the Bearcats were limited to minus-3 yards.

Grape Creek led 12-0 at halftime and held off a late comeback attempt by Ballinger.

This is Grape Creek's first win over Ballinger since 2016 and only the third win ever in the series.

Ballinger beat Grape Creek 41-0 last year.
