Lady Blizzards net one win, one loss

The Lady Blizzards opened up the first week of their 2016-17 season with a home win over Gorman, 38-18, and a 45-19 loss on the road at Hamlin.

         In their first game of the season, the Lady Blizzards defeated the Gorman Lady Panthers, 38-18. After the crowd got Winters’ pumped up as the participants in the Big Sister/Little Sister Mentoring Program were introduced before the game, the Lady Blizzards jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, it was more of the same, as Winters extended its lead to 18-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Lady Blizzards outscored Gorman, 12-2, to take at 30-8 lead into the final quarter. In the fourth  quarter, Gorman outscored Winters, 10-8, for the final margin. Monique Carrillo had 12 points to go along with six rebounds. Christy Kruse add seven points, while Cha Cha Lovelace had six points to go along with six steals.  In the JV game, the Lady Blizzards won, 25-17. Shelby Gray had six points, while Aliciea Reyna and Jezebel Gonzalez added five each.

            On Friday, the Lady Blizzards traveled to Hamlin and lost 45-19. The Lady Pipers jumped on Winters early, leading by as many as 10 points in the first quarter, but the Lady Blizzards managed to cut the lead to 14-8 by the end of the period. In the second quarter, Hamlin pulled away leading 28-11 at halftime. In the third quarter, neither team could find the basket, as Hamlin outscored Winters, 5-2, to take a 33-13 lead into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Pipers outscored the Lady Blizzards, 12-6, for the final margin. Monique Carrillo had eight points to go along with 13 rebounds, while Christy Kruse had five points to go along with four blocked shots.

This week the Lady Blizzards hosted Blackwell on Tuesday and then are set to play in the Roscoe Tournament on Friday and Saturday. In the round-robin tournament, Winters will play Roscoe at 3:30 p.m. and Highland at 5 p.m. on Friday, and Ira at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The junior varsity girls will play in two separate tournaments this week.  The JV White team will travel to Roscoe and play Roscoe JV at 2 p.m. and Highland JV at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and then face Ira JV at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The JV Blue team will play in the Cross Plains JV Tournament today and Friday. On Thursday, Winters will play Cross Plains JV at 9 a.m. and Gorman JV at 11 a.m. in pool play. Friday will be bracketed so who and when the Lady Blizzards will play will depend on Thursday’s results.
