Winters annual Dove Fest approaching

Alexis Silva won the $1000 scholarship awarded by Dove Fest every year.

Winters annual Dove Fest is fast approaching! This year the Dove Fest will be on Saturday, September 5th.

The event draws in community members and those from outside the community each year. This will be the 17th annual Dove Fest, which has given out $206,000 to local nonprofits and youth organizations such as FFA, 4H, the band, cheerleaders, etc.

The Dove Fest also grants scholarships to local students and helps fund charities within the community. Alexis Silva won the $1000 scholarship in 2019. The scholarship is usually awarded from an essay that students write, “The entry into the essay contest is through Winters High School. Usually the essay subject is about living in Winters or dove hunting,” Dove Fest executive committee member Laura Day told us last year.

In 2019, Dove Fest awarded over $24,000 to 20 local youth and nonprofit organizations.

One of the big draws to Dove Fest is the firearms raffle. At $5/ticket, even buying 20 or 30 is a bargain if you win. It is well worth the chance in the opinion of many people who attend the event every year.

The rifles this year include:

Browning Citori CXS White O/U 12 ga. Shotgun

Remington 11-87 Sportsman 12 ga. Semi-Auto Shotgun

Winchester Super X Pump 12 ga. Shotgun

Remington 870 Express 20 ga. Shotgun

CZ-712 12 ga. Shotgun

Ruger AR-15 .223 Semi-Auto Rifle

Marlin 30-30 Lever Action Rifle

Remington 700 Synthetic Stock 30-60 Long Range Rifle

Remington 783 6.5 Creedmoor Bolt Action Wood Stock Rifle

Weatherby Vanguard .243 Bolt Action Synthetic Stock

The rifle raffle tickets are $5 each.

There will also be a Gun Board this year, “We will be selling slots for 2 Gun Boards the day of Dove Fest, so be looking out for the Gun Boards! The guns will be a Glock 19X 17+1 Capacity 9mm and a Sig P238 .380. These will only go on sale the day of the event.”

There will also be the silent auction that is held every year. If you would like to donate an item to the silent auction, you can call 325-754-0120.

As always, the event will feature a BBQ lunch, “Our mission at Winters Dove Fest is to provide you with outstanding brisket and fixin's with a casual environment and live music so you will be rested and ready for an evening of dove hunting! Lunch will be served from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM and meal tickets will be available under the Big Blue tent at the Winters City Park. Plates will be available in the Community Center with both indoor and outdoor seating available. The gun ticket drawing will follow the meal, so be sure to register for a chance to win!

Meal Tickets: $12/person includes BBQ lunch, drink, dessert, live band viewing and chance for door prizes.“

There will also be the annual clay shoot. The cost is 25 clays for $5, “The Clay Shoot will be located about 1 mile north of Winters on North US 82, take Rodeo Arena Road East - with good signage pointing the direction. Registration starts at 8 am on Sat, Sept 5, 2020 and event will go through 11 AM. Various competition shoots available. FMI Call Colby Pritchard at 325-977-0174 or Johnny Bob Pritchard at 325-977-0766.”

There are some changes this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, “Because of the extenuating circumstances around Covid 19, our 2020 Dove Fest will look a bit different this year. We will still have a social distanced Clay Pigeon Shoot. Our BBQ lunch offering brisket, sausage and the fixings will be offered through a drive-through. Gun raffle and gun board tickets will still be available. Our usual silent auction will be online this year utilizing Facebook (so be sure and like our facebook page!). The facebook address is www.facebook.com/wintersdovefest.

We welcome the hunters and visitors to our small town and hope you have a great stay with us. We have a full line-up of events scheduled and hope to have the best Dove Fest yet. Events include live music, gun raffles and a gun board, a silent and a live auction, the Clay Shoot, and a fun barbecue lunch in the park.”
