The Runnels County Historical Commission will release a Premier Edition of their new book on August 28, 2020.

The Runnels County Historical Commission is releasing Stories from Runnels County Volume IV, the fourth book on the history of Runnels County and the fifth book published by the RCHC in recent years.

Volume IV Stories from Runnels County was compiled from submissions of Commission members and other contributors in Runnels County. The 388-page book is published by Ballinger Printing & Graphics and includes many pictures of local interest. The first printing of the book will be offered as a Premier Edition.

The book is divided into five sections—County History, Communities, County Businesses, General Stories and Early Families. Learn about the saloons, stagecoaches, railroads, and an 1840 Indian fight in Runnels County. The book shares how this county contributed to starting the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and Thornton’s Department Store in Abilene. The reader will learn about the towns of Olfen, Norton, and Hatchel. Stories of some early families—Parramore, Spreen, Baron, Teplicek, Andrae, Vogler, Zentner, and others—are told by their descendants. Rabbit drives, mule barns, picnics at China Mott, cattle drives, dancing, and feuds make up some of the stories of Runnels County.

The book shows the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of county residents through inventions and manufacturing in the area. During the early days of Runnels County, it was truly the Wild West!
