It was a busy weekend in Winters as their annual basketball tournament kicked off on Thursday.

The tournament had teams come in from Merkel, Ballinger, Stamford, Eula, Winters, Colorado City, Westbrook, Abilene Christian, Albany, Bangs, Hamlin and Sonora. The teams would play over 60 games between Thursday and Saturday. There were varsity boys, varsity girls, JV boys and JV girls.

The eventual tournament winner for the varsity boys was Ballinger. For the varsity girls, Eula took home the tourney championship.

Ballinger varsity boys started off with a 45-41 loss to Merkel. In that game the Bearcats DJ Cavasos and Kenjrik Manley each contributed 13 points. The Bearcats then beat Westbrook 55-47. Ballinger’s Ryan Elliott scored 16 points in the win. The Bearcats next opponent, the Stamford Bulldogs, fell by the score of 51-41. The next game for the Bearcats was against Eula. The game was more defense than offense as Ballinger defeated Eula 30-20.

Winters varsity boys began the tournament with a win over Colorado City by the score of 38-34. Alex Salas was Winters’ high scorer with 19 points. Winters lost to Stamford, 63-32, on Saturday in their first game of the day. Then they followed that loss up with another loss, this one to Merkel, 69-53.

The Blizzards’ varsity boys ended the tournament in 4th place.

The Winters varsity girls defeated Bangs by 2 points, winning 43-41. The Blizzards’ Marley Smith scored 16 points in the victory. Winters dropped the next game to Westbrook by the score of 48-35. Smith was again the high scorer for the Blizzards with 14 points. The girls then fell to Albany, 42-40, in a game that didn’t see either team put up more than a single digit lead.

On Saturday, the Bearcats took of the kid gloves and started playing some hard-nosed basketball. They dismantled the Westbrook team by the score of 68-28. The Bearcat junior guard, Ryan Elliott, dropped 22 points on the hapless Wildcats. Westbrook’s offense couldn’t power past or even threaten the Bearcats defense that held them to under 30 points for only the second time this season. The Bearcats won the tourney championship with that win over Westbrook.

Ballinger’s varsity boys finished in 1st place, followed by Westbrook, Stamford and Winters, respectively.

Ballinger’s Johnathan Delgado was the MVP of the varsity boys tournament. The All-tournament team consisted of Ryan Elliott, Ballinger; DJ Cavasos, Ballinger; Jacob Walter, Westbrook; Keenan Morris, Westbrook; Alex Salas, Winters; Chaney Bahlman, Winters; Austin Brewer, Stamford; Trace Price, Stamford.

Eula took the varsity girls championship with a 40-32 defeat of Westbrook. Second place went to Westbrook, 3rd place to Colorado City and 4th place to Bangs, respectively.

The varsity girls MVP was Anna Masonheimer of Eula.

The all tournament team honors went to; Mia Monroe, Colorado City; Kaci Hudson, Colorado City; Kyra Smith, Bangs; Trenedi Deal, Bangs; Presley Vernon, Eula; Karli Fostel, Eula; Bailey Connell, Westbrook; Reagan Hale, Westbrook.
