SONORA - On April 26th, students from Ballinger and Winters participated in the “Best of the West” Special Olympics in Sonora, Texas. Students from several area schools including Ballinger and Winters participated in a variety of events.

SONORA - On April 26th, students from Ballinger and Winters participated in the “Best of the West” Special Olympics in Sonora, Texas. Students from several area schools including Ballinger and Winters participated in a variety of events.

Special Olympics Texas is a year-round movement, holding more than 300 competitions annually on area, regional and state levels. Event divisions are based on age, gender and ability level to give athletes an equal chance to win. Each participant receives a medal or ribbon following their events.

Special Olympics Texas has six statewide events annually: Summer Games, Equestrian, Sailing/Kayaking, Fall Classic, Winter Games and Flag Football. Statewide competition locations vary approximately every three years.

Special Olympics, Inc. holds World Games every other year and USA National Games every four years.

The results from the Sonora "Best of the West" meet were as follows:

Ballinger

5th grade- Nick Ogle- 1st in both 50 m dash and tennis ball throw

6th grade- Chase Mendoza- 3rd- 100 m dash, 1st- standing long jump

7th grade- Lynn Fuentes- 2nd -100 m dash, 1st- softball throw

7th grade- Kamy Cuellar- 1st -25m walk, 1st tennis ball throw

9th grade- Kaycee Horton- 1st in 50 m assisted walk, 3rd- tennis ball throw

11th grade- Zach Martinez- 1st- 50 m dash, 1st- tennis ball throw

Winters

3rd grade- Rico Rodrgiuez- 2nd in 50 m dash, 2nd in tennis ball throw
