SAN DIEGO — San Diego coach Rey Ramirez isn’t one to get overly excited about preseason rankings.
His Lady Vaqueros have been ranked many times before and on a handful of occasions, those San Diego girls have knocked off teams ranked higher than them. Still, he’d probably trade a solid and fundamentally sound victory for a state ranking.
Still, credit has to given where credit it due, and according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Softball Poll, the Lady Vaqueros are ranked No. 6 in Class 3A. San Diego was 27-9 last season and 8-1 in district. San Diego reached the fourth round of the state playoffs and lost in the regional semifinals. They lost to Hallettsville, which is ranked No. 5 this preseason.
The only team that San Diego lost to in district play last year, Santa Gertrudis Academy, is ranked No. 4.
San Diego and Santa Gertrudis won’t have to worry about playing one another in the regular season since realignment moved them to separate districts. San Diego is in 30-3A and Santa Gertrudis is in 31-3A.
Robstown is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A.
The Freer Lady Buckaroos, who went down in classification from a year ago in the latest round of UIL realignments, is ranked No. 8 in Class 2A.
District 30-5A favorite Gregory-Portland, which played in the 5A state tournament last year, is ranked No. 2 in Class 5A this preseason.
