New motel already enjoying success.

Winters has welcomed a new business with a grand opening on Sunday, December 2nd, 2018. Marci and Jimmy Bliss bought the old motel in Winters and have done some extensive renovating as well as renaming it from the Winters Inn to The Bliss Motel.

Residents of Winters showed up to check out the new recently made-over rooms and other fresh changes to update the property. Members of the Winters city council, Chamber of Commerce and WAIBAC group were on hand to welcome the new business owners.

The Bliss’ aren’t new business owners as they’ve been entrepreneurs most of their lives, owning liquor stores, rental properties, a limousine service, raised and sold exotic birds as well as owning storage buildings. Marci talks about how they came to reside in Winters, “We were retired and living on the coast. Last year we decided to buy a ranch here about 6 miles outside of town and when we were driving through town, we saw that the motel was for sale so we checked into it.”

She says that one other factor that brought them here was the humidity on the Texas coast, “We lived in Portland, TX. The humidity is bad so we decided to move away from the coast. We Googled “ranches for sale” and found one about 6 miles from Winters.”

The renovations have included work inside and outside. The rooms are all freshly painted and had all gas pipes removed and replaced with a/c units that have heating options. The bathrooms are newly tiled and spotless. They removed the old beds and replaced them with queen and king size beds. New curtains and bedspreads liven up the rooms that receive a significant amount of west Texas sunlight to help open them up. The rooms have all of the amenities such as microwave ovens, flat screen televisions and mini refrigerators.

New furniture such as dressers and nightstands also adorn all of the rooms.

Jimmy says that the work will continue as they work to improve the property, “We still have a lot of work that we want to do. We’re going to build a white 7’ sheet-metal fence around the property to give the guests a bit more privacy. We’re also going to repaint some outside areas to brighten them up. We have Anna and Chris as the managers and they live on the property so our guest will be taken care of 24-7.”

The motel has been transformed from a vacant property just as you enter Winters coming from Ballinger, to a welcoming location for weary travelers. As many small towns across the country feel the pains of older citizens passing on and younger citizens moving to larger cities, it’s refreshing to see people like that Bliss’ opening up a new venture in a small town. These towns need all of the business and industry that they can get and many times it’s just a matter of someone coming in and taking that first step to reinvigorate a town.

There was not an open motel in Winters prior to the Bliss’ purchasing their motel. People flocked to town for Dove fest earlier this year but had to stay at hotels in other towns. At a Winters city council meeting during the summer, one man spoke up and said that his high school reunion had been moved to Austin because there were no hotels in Winters. The opening of this hotel will surely mean more business and money for Winters and gives them a starting place to attract other businesses. According to research on Loopnet, the Winters Inn had a steadily increasing gross avenue of $52,995 in 2013, $70,167 in 2014 and $80,445 in 2015 which is the last year are available. This bodes well for the Bliss and their new venture.

The hotel is on Main street, easily accessible and has the aforementioned on-site management.

The Bliss’ are off to a great start. The hotel had a soft opening about a month ago and was filled to capacity during the holidays.

The hotel is located at 608 S. Main street in Winters and their phone number is 325-754-0241.
