BALLINGER - The Ballinger City Council took action on a social media policy to be included in the City of Ballinger employee handbook, during their regular meeting held Monday, May 21.

Interim City Manager Randy Everett said that he worked with City Attorney Pat Chesser to draft a policy which before was non-existent in the city’s employee handbook.

The city may monitor employees’ access and their posts to city computers  during normal working hours according to the policy.

In his report, Everett informed the council that auditors were at city hall last week and delivered a good report on city finances to him.

“Everything is in great shape,” Everett reported.

The water department is continuing to install large meters. Everett said that dryer and warmer weather has been causing an elevated number of water leaks.

Everett said $39,000 has been budgeted for street paving.

The streets that are to be paved include Railroad Avenue, one block of 11th Street, two blocks on Country Club Road and short one-block areas that will be paved. There is still some paving at the City Park.

Everett said he is concerned about water accessibility in the downtown area with regard to the fire department and that he was worried about this should there “be a major fire in the downtown area.”

“As old as these buildings are downtown a fire could spread like crazy,” Everett said.

He said the city will be assessing the hydrants downtown in coming weeks.

Also during the meeting members were informed that the Park Board will be overseeing the annual barbecue cook off which is slated for June 30 at City Park. Preliminary plans call for the park to be open to the public along with the pool and the miniature golf course

In other business Monday:

Following executive session the council approved a measure to post the city manager’s position on the Texas Municipal League website, the City of Ballinger website as well as in the Runnels County Register. The job is open until filled.
