Forty members of Runnels County 4-H competed in the 2018 District 7 Food Challenge contest at the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo last month and many of the Runnels County teams walked away with top honors for their efforts.

Forty members of Runnels County 4-H competed in the 2018 District 7 Food Challenge contest at the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo last month and many of the Runnels County teams walked away with top honors for their efforts.

The food challenge events are very competitive with members receiving baskets of ingredients and they are on the clock to prepare their recipes.

The Runnels County 4-H “Queens of Cuisine” team won first place in the intermediate division. The team included Coach Joan McCleery, Saige Boatright, Katy McCleery, Jessica Hinds, Kameryn Schwertner and Kaily Murray. The team also won first place in the intermediate main dish category.

Runnels County teams held the top three spots in the junior division with the “Kitchen Kings” team winning first with Coach Crystal Clinton, and team members Collin Cook, Brady Clinton, Jaylen Hernandez, Cade Strube and Bryson Lange. The team also won first place in the junior breads and cereals category.

The Runnels County 4-H “Sassy Chefs” headed up by Coach Jonna Boatright and members Sadie Boatright, Kendal Riddle, Jayden Hinds, Greenly Mayberry and Jaycee Hickey took second place. They also won first place in junior nutricious snacks.

In third place were “The Seasoning Spillers” from Runnels County 4-H with Coach Ryder Smith at the helm and members Bryson Book, Jaymie Herring, Courtney Smith, Jaxon Hohensee and Ryleigh Glass cooking the dish. They won first place in the junior main dish category.
