WINTERS - A Winters man was killed in what law enforcement called an officer involved shooting on Friday afternoon, according to a report from the Runnels County Sheriff's Office.
WINTERS - A Winters man was killed in what law enforcement called an officer involved shooting on Friday afternoon, according to a report from the Runnels County Sheriff’s Office.
According to reports, at 9:20 a.m. Runnels County dispatch center received a call of a person, believed to be in mental distress, who had fired a shot inside the home while family members were inside. Family members had already left the home.
Runnels County deputies and Winters Police Department Officer arrived at the residence located on FM 2405 north of Winters. Officers observed the individual inside the home with a rifle. Deputies and officers began trying to communicate with the individual, with no results, Runnels County Sheriff Carl Squyres reported.
The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office was contacted and responded with their tactical team as well as a negotiator. Department of Public Safety Officers and Texas Rangers also arrived to assist.
Officers continued to attempt communication with the individual, without results. Officers observed the individual inside the home several times pacing, still holding a rifle and at one point, pointed the rifle at officers through a window, Squyres reported.
At approximately 1:15 p.m. the individual walked out of the residence onto a patio area. The individual shouldered a rifle and took aim at deputies.
“Deputies were forced to fire a single round striking the individual,” Squyres reported.
North Runnels EMS crews were stationed a short distance down the farm to market highway and responded immediately.
Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 Richard Hamilton arrived a short time later and pronounced the individual deceased.
The name of the individual is being withheld.
The body has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Mesquite Texas for autopsy.
Due to the incident involved a shooting by a law enforcement officer, the Texas Rangers are investigating.
