RUNNELS COUNTY - A Winters woman was killed in a two vehicle accident that occurred late Thursday night, according to the Runnels County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff Carl Squyres, the accident occurred at 11:25 p.m. on Highway 83 about six miles north of Winters near County Road 312, when a tractor trailer rig that was traveling north collided head on with a van that was southbound.

Squyres said at the time of the accident, the driver of the tractor trailer, identified as Hugo Alexander Claros Pineda, male, 44, of Dallas, swerved in order to avoid hitting a cow that was in the road and collided with the van, which burst in to flames.

The driver of the 2008 Chrysler van was identified as Doris Jean Morrison, 48, of Winters and was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Glenda Woods.

The tractor trailer was carrying fertilizer products and it toppled and landed in the ditch on the west side of the highway and caught fire, where the van also landed. The driver of truck sustained minor injuries.

Several agencies were on the scene including the RCSO, the Winters Police Department and Winters Volunteer Fire Department and the Department of Public Safety.
