PFLUGERVILLE - Seven Ballinger High School students performed at Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest Monday, May 29, at Hendrickson High School and Kelly Lane Middle School in Pflugerville.

PFLUGERVILLE - Seven Ballinger High School students performed at Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest Monday, May 29, at Hendrickson High School and Kelly Lane Middle School in Pflugerville.

Three students took top Division I (Superior) ratings and gold medals including Benjamin Colombo – Baritone Saxophone Solo; Jackson Miller – Oboe Solo and

Zakkary Ottmers – Vocal Solo.

Students receiving Division II (Excellent) ratings and silver medals on vocal solos included Laura Brown, Benjamin Colombo, Jackson Miller, Raven Parra, and Michael Young.

Clarice McKinnon received a Division III rating on her vocal solo at state, which approximates a Division I rating at the region level.

Each of these students qualified for State by receiving Division I ratings in their respective events in regional UIL solo and ensemble competition this past February.

Zakkary Ottmers qualified for State all four years of his high school career, and took four straight Division I ratings at State.

Jackson Miller qualified for state three years in both instrumental and vocal solos and has earned Division I ratings on his previous vocal solos.

Clarice McKinnon, Raven Parra, and Michael Young made their second appearance at state solo and ensemble contest, and Laura Brown and Benjamin Colombo made their first appearance this year.

All directors were in agreement that each of these students prepared and performed to the very best of their abilities. They were great representatives of Ballinger High School.

Band directors Janet Wilson and Matthew Cleveland, choral director Dale Ellis, elementary music teacher Ida Lee Ellis, and theater arts director Deidra Dallas served as faculty sponsors for the state events. Matthew Cleveland played the piano accompaniments for the instrumental events and Ida Lee Ellis played the accompaniments for the vocalists.

Parents Rochelle Coleman, Phillip and Genni Colombo, Ellen McKinnon, Starr Sims, and Carlee Young attended the contest, along with A. J. Colombo, brother of Benjamin Colombo, and Kaden Ottmers, brother of Zakkary Ottmers.
