WINTERS – Veterans from across Runnels County drove to Winters on Wednesday, May 24 to fill up at the The Crossing Travel Market thanks to the Veterans Assistance Program offered through Central Texas Opportunities and organized by Runnels County Veterans Service Officer Sandra Van Zant. Under the program, veterans, their spouses and or widows or widowers, are eligible for up to $500 each in gas thanks to a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans Assistance.

This is the second of several like events coming to the area, Van Zant said.

"I hope to plan another event very soon," Van Zant said.

The number of veterans served Friday amounted to more than 50, by 11:30 a.m. The veterans and family members were waiting in line early, she said.

"The cars were wrapped around the parking lot," Van Zant said.

Leroy Moore, a veteran of the U.S. Army, was one of the individuals served at the event.

Moore, who served from 1964-66 in Germany as a cook, said he was appreciative of the service.

"I think this is absolutely great!," he said. Overall the grants offer things like utility assistance, rent or mortgage assistance, case management, transportation, medical and dental assistance and employment services and referrals. Those eligible for the programs are veterans, a surviving spouse or dependent.

Gordon Gloria, program director for CTO of Coleman, was at the second event and once again assisting the veterans and spouses with paperwork.

"It has been going really good," Gloria said.

He has said he hopes to schedule events like this once or twice a month.

Glen Donham, a retired senior chief from the U.S. Navy is the CTO representative in Runnels County and he was assisting the veterans as well. He was assisted by Yvette Enriquez of CTO in Brownwood and Amber McClain of CTO in Eastland.

Central Texas Opportunities, Inc. serves clients in Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, McCulloch and Runnels counties.
