We have brought back the Athlete of the Week (AOTW) recognition. Due to working on design changes I didn’t get it in last week, so we will include both weeks 1 and 2 in this edition.
Over the summer if you had told someone that two games into this football season Miles would be 2-0, Winters would be 1-1 after defeating Eldorado, and Ballinger would be 0-2, they might have called you crazy.
WINTERS - It was an emotional game for the Cross Plains Buffaloes who came into Winters on Friday night to take on the Blizzards. On August 8th, Cross Plains student athlete Ryan Hopkins was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident. Hopkins, a senior, was a member of the football team and had played on varsity for three years. As with most schools in 2A and 3A, Hopkins played multiple positions, including wide receiver and safety.
Winters - To say that the Winters Blizzards had a difficult season last year would be an understatement. They lost star quarterback Jon Kullen Busher to a horrific leg injury early in the season that sidelined him from all sports for the rest of the school year. Busher was having a career night when the injury occurred. It was a blow that the Blizzards wouldn’t be able to recover from. Overall, the Blizzards finished the season at 2-7. They finished 1-4 in district play. Their two wins came against Hico, 48-7, and De Leaon, 55-21. The win over Hico was overshadowed by Busher’s career-ending injury.
It was a rough go for the Miles Bulldogs in 2021. Miles finished the season under new head coach Jayson Wilhelm with a 3-8 record. The Bulldogs did make it into the playoffs, falling 41-10 in the 1st round to Granger. But, as they say, “That’s last year.”

ATHENS – The 2022 Toyota ShareLunker collection season claimed its spot as one of the best in program history. Anglers contributed 24 ShareLunkers from nine different lakes across the state, surpassing 2021’s impressive total of 23 Legacy fish. This season nearly matched 1995’s program record of 27 during a January through March collection timespan.
BALLINGER - The Ballinger Bearcats new athletic director and head football coach, Ty Lang, has his job cut out for him this season. Let’s start off by going over the Bearcats schedule.
