THE IDLE AMERICAN

I, as well as most others who string words together, will never be confused with Robert Frost, the poetry genius from whose pen flowed marvelous words about his beloved New England. One of his best--published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1915--was “The Road Not Taken.” Actually, it was intended as a joke to a writer friend.

What to expect

A quarter century ago, when I was expecting my daughter, someone gifted me the book What to Expect When You’re Expecting. As I recall, I looked up specifi c topics only after I experienced them and thought, “What in the heck?” For example, I recall one shopping trip when I tried to squeeze through a narrow aisle between racks of clothes. It would have been plenty room for not-pregnant Renae. But somehow, my brain didn’t register that my body now needed room for two people to pass.

Dear Reader, As you can see, we continue to change and improve your newspaper for the better. We have now added two additional color pages. Instead of having the only color pages as A1 and A10, we will now have A1, A2, A9, A10 as color pages. We may expand this even further in the future.

I was deeply moved by the show of support from the people of Winters to the people of Cross Plains at the football game on Friday. As it says in the article, Cross Plains student and athlete Ryan Hopkins died tragically in an automobile accident on August 8th. I have lost a son and know the pain of losing a child, as many others know, unfortunately. There is no pain like it, and it never eases up. Sometimes bearing that pain alone can be paralyzing.

Debts and bells

This past week I read where all college graduates with college debt would be relieved of a portion or all of that debt. Personally I think they entered into that debt knowing they would have to pay it back. Their education gained from their selected school of higher learning should have given them a skill or skills for them to earn a good living and pay that debt back to their university. What does paying off their debt by our government say about owning up to one’s responsibility? What is that payoff going to cost us taxpayers? Did you pay off your debts?

Dear Readers, I hope y’all will enjoy the article this week on The Promise. It’s not local, but it is connected in that it is a Christian play put on every Fall by a crew of over 100 actors and crew at the Texas Amphitheater in Glen Rose. The play is based on scriptures taken directly from the Bible. The Texas Amphitheater seats around 3,500 people who will fill it to capacity during the seven weeks of its run.

How does that make you feel?

It’s a meme and a longstanding joke that if you go to a therapist, you will be asked after every statement, “How does that make you feel?”. I remember my supervisor watching one of my first therapy sessions as an intern and during our discussion of it, he pointed out that I had asked that very question, and invited me to think deeply about what it implied.

Rainy Day Memories

The other day it rained and with that came some memories from my youth. I remember watching the water run along the curb of the street. We would make dams with dirt and leaves trying to stop the leading edge from moving on. We knew from past experiences where the water would pool and there we would play with popsicle sticks and pretend they were boats and we would bomb them with rocks or dirt clods. It didn’t take much to entertain us little boys.

Cows, content, and commitme

Dear Reader As many of you know, the Register and Gatehouse Media were acquired in 2019 by Gannett Media/USA Today. On February 1st of this year, CherryRoad Media purchased several dozen newspapers from Gannett, including the Register. Since the acquisition, the newspaper has concentrated on bringing back the old ways we followed under Gatehouse; running as much local content as possible.
