The new year has just started, and many people have begun 2023 with good intentions for living a better, healthier life. However, you may remember the old saw, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” This saying provides a hint that intentions are not by themselves effective, and it also provides a mental image of the road to damnation being covered with cast-off intentions of fellow travelers along that way. Many cultures like ours celebrate ringing in new year with certain traditions, foods, ceremonies, all revolving around a party or get-together of sorts. More than likely, no two households celebrate the same Foods play a big part in the new year celebrations. Some also believe that if they do not eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day, bad luck will follow. Others believe that if they eat cabbage on New Year’s Day, good luck will ensue. We all have experiences that may be the same or some type of variation from old and new traditions.

Meals on Wheels Plus memorial donations

Donations made to Meals on Wheels Plus in Abilene by, and in memory, of people living in Runnels County are used to provide meals for frail individuals who need this help in Ballinger, Rowena & Winters. Ballinger, Rowena & Winters Meals on Wheels programs are currently serving 125 residents of Runnels County who are elderly and/or younger adults with disabilities who are unable to provide balanced meals for themselves. Volunteers delivering those meals are also checking on the well-being of each person on their route and forming friendships. Lives are touched and enriched because a caring volunteer knocked on the door and delivered a freshly prepared lunch. Donors and volunteers are vital to the continued success of these programs.

Talent Show at The Last Chapter Come out on Friday and Saturday to the Last Chapter to win $100 in their weekly talent show! Winners from each week will compete for a $1,000 grand prize on December 31st! The Last Chapter, aka Old Town Christmas, is located on Highway 67 next to the John Deere house south of Ballinger. Inflationary challenges affecting retail beef prices

Though retail beef prices are lower than a year ago, prices remain historically higher as inflationary challenges affect the overall U.S. economy and projected fewer cows heading into 2023, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service livestock economist. “Retail beef prices are lower than a year ago even though the total Consumer Price Index number is 7.1% higher than last year,” said David Anderson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension livestock economist, Bryan-College Station. “(Retail beef prices) have been lower for several months now. And they are lower than last month. However, the level of prices remains high in comparison to the past several decades.”
