Ballinger’s Christy Zhuang was elected as DECA’s state president several months ago. She’s now been selected for DECA’s Presidential Member of the Month. Pretty much everyone in Ballinger knows the young dynamo. In addition to DECA, Zhuang is also a member of FCCLA and runs her own photography business. I would say “she runs her own photography business when not busy.” But, that wouldn’t be accurate since the young lady is never not busy.
I, as well as most others who string words together, will never be confused with Robert Frost, the poetry genius from whose pen flowed marvelous words about his beloved New England. One of his best--published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1915--was “The Road Not Taken.” Actually, it was intended as a joke to a writer friend.
This past weekend was a busy one in Miles. It was homecoming weekend and lots of folks showed up for the ballgame and stayed Saturday for the Cottonfest. The Cottonfest is a weekend celebrating the benefits and values of cotton, and there might have been some grilling, vendors selling their wares, and numerous reasons to have fun in the great outdoors.
Many famous last words have been said over the centuries; “Give me liberty, or give me death.” “I regret that I have but one life to give for my country.” Since 9/11, we’ve added two more words to the Lexicon of American patriotism: “Let’s Roll.” Those were the last words by Todd Beamer on United Flight 93, the man who called 911 from his hijacked airliner; the man who formed a group with other passengers and attacked the hijackers; the man whose group of heroes stopped their hijacked airliner from crashing into either the White House or the Capitol. “Let’s roll.” Those words were repeated by Ballinger Fire Dept captain Ken Kvapil during his remarks on Sunday; words that Kvapil pointed out that are painted on the back of the bucket of Ballinger’s Ladder One; “Let’s roll.” Uribe once again formed a group of dedicated firefighters and family members who walked 5 kilometers, in full turnout gear, to commemorate the sacrifice made on 9/11 by 343 firefi ghters on 9/11.
