Baseball history has been made in Ballinger as a new team has been formed and will represent the American Legion League. Since this is a first, the Runnels County Register wants the community to get to know Post 8 Cannoneers.

Baseball history has been made in Ballinger as a new team has been formed and will represent the American Legion League. Since this is a first, the Runnels County Register wants the community to get to know Post 8 Cannoneers.

The players are from six high schools including Ballinger High School, Wall High School, Central High School in San Angelo, Reagan County High School, Gorman High School and De Leon High School.

Head Coach Robert Virden said the Post 8 Cannoneers are slated to play in the Collegiate Showcase Tournament July 5-8 on fields at four campuses in Abilene including Abilene Christian University, McMurry University, Hardin Simmons University and Cisco Junior College.

On July 14-15 the Cannoneers will play the San Antonio Adult Baseball League in four game series in San Antonio.

The Cannoneers will be practicing at the Ballinger High School baseball field on 2:30 - 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Post 8 Cannoneers will be playing in the American Legion State Tournament July 24-29 in Brenham.

This week the featured player is Dawson Daniel of San Angelo. His father, Coach Mark Daniel and Coach Tony Harral are also featured this week.

Dawson Daniel is number 18 on the American Legion Post 8 Cannoneers. He is 17 years old and attends Central High School in San Angelo and is the son of Mark and Shanna Daniel. He plays first base and third base and has been playing baseball for 15 years. He plans to attend college, play baseball and become a neurologist.

American Legion Post 8 Cannoneer’s Assistant Coach Mark Daniel from San Angelo. He has been coaching for five years and his son, Dawson Daniel on the team.

American Legion Post 8 Cannoneer’s Assistant Coach Tony Harral is a Ballinger High School graduate and father of team player Cody Harral. He has been coaching for five years.

The Post 8 Cannoneers is comprised of players ages 19 and under. To be eligible to play according to the American Legion League rules, eligible players must be from schools where the sophomore, junior and senior class is under 5,000.
