TEXARKANA - The American Legion Post 8 Cannoneers of Ballinger won one game and lost two during the American Legion Tri-State Preparatory Tournament held June 15-17 in Texarkana.

The tournament began with a 10-2 loss against the Texarkana American Legion Bulldogs on Friday, but the Post 8 Cannoneers would bounce back Saturday with a 13-12 win over the Burkburnett Baseball Academy.

Coach Robert Virden said Cody Harral of Ballinger led the team to the win in the eight inning game.

"He played well throughout that game," Virden said.

Other standout players in the win included Luke Young and Tanner Seider both of Wall.

"Seider drove in the winning run, scored by Trent Padron of Gorman," Virden said.

Virden said the team played very well in the next game against the Hot Springs Arkansas Titans despite a 4-2 loss. The Titans were the tournament winners.

"It was an errorless game on both sides," Virden said.

During Friday's game against Texarkana, Baylor Halfmann took the loss for Post 8 Cannoneers. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs while striking out two and walking one. In Friday's game, Joe Gilligan went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Post 8 Cannoneers in hits.

Virden said overall the Post 8 Cannoneers really matured as a team.

"We were playing against national level competition," Virden said. "It was a great weekend."

The next game currently being scheduled and to be announced will be against the American Legion team in Pecos.

The Post 8 Cannoneers will be playing in the American Legion State Tournament July 24-29 in Brenham.
