BALLINGER - Ballinger High School has found a new girls basketball coach, and it's a familiar name in West Texas -- Jerry McSherry.

The longtime coach, who graduated from high school in Menard and college at Angelo State University, has coached all around the San Angelo area, including stops in Menard, Brady, Sweetwater, Eden, Irion County and Lohn.

The 28-year coaching veteran recorded his 500th win in 2017 while at Llano, where he was coaching before being hired by Ballinger recently.

"We are very excited about what Jerry brings to Ballinger," said Ballinger ISD Superintendent Jeff Butts. "We think with his experience and his energy that he is going to be a good fit here.

"We wanted somebody that had girls coordinator experience, who could oversee the whole girls program, and Jerry fits that mold."

McSherry replaces Stacy Smalley, who resigned last month after a two-year stint in Ballinger.

The Lady Cats went 24-11 this past season and finished as the runner-up behind Wall in District 4-3A for the second consecutive year.
