KELLER — The Brownwood Lady Lions opened the 2018 softball campaign in successful fashion Tuesday night, going on the road to collect a 10-2 victory over Class 6A Keller Central.

The Lady Lions (1-0) scored twice in the top of the second inning and added four more runs in the third to seize control, 6-0. Keller Central tallied its first run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lady Lions answered with a four-run top of the seventh to extend the advantage to 10-1. Keller Central scored once more in its final at-bat.

Brownwood generated 13 hits on the offensive end — three by Ayanna Clemons, two each by Aubrie Harris and Chyanne Ellett and one apiece by Annie Gillispie, Ashlynn Patteson, Yisel Mendoza, Karly Harper, Auzzlyn Benedict and Mya McDowell.

Gillispie’s three RBIs were a team-best trailed by a pair from Harper and one each from Clemons, Mendoza, Benedict, McDowell and Landry Holden.

In the circle, Ellett went the distance and yielded two earned runs on six hits with 16 strikeouts and five walks.

During Brownwood’s two-run second inning, Clemons singled to center field with two outs and Mendoza followed and reached on an error. Harper then doubled to left field, plating Clemons, while McDowell followed with an RBI infield single that brought home Mendoza.

In the third inning, Harris, Ellett and Patteson all singled to load the bases before the first out was recorded. Holden’s RBI ground out brought home Harris with Brownwood’s third run. Clemons then singled up the middle to knock in Lexie Castillo, courtesy-running for Ellett. Mendoza’s RBI single to right field followed and scored Patteson for a 5-0 advantage. Harper capped the scoring in the third with an RBI fielder’s choice that plated Clemons.

Brownwood’s final four runs in the top of the seventh all scored with two outs. Benedict’s single to left field plated Clemons, who reached on a one-out base hit. McDowell then walked ahead of a three-RBI triple to right field by Gillispie that scored Benedict, McDowell and Holden, who reached on a fielder’s choice.

The Lady Lions are back in action this weekend at the Eastland tournament.
