The Winters Lady Blizzards closed out their district schedule with a hard fought 32-30 win over the Irion County Lady Hornets last Tuesday. The win clinched third place for Winters and, combined with Ozona's win over Miles, eliminated Irion County from playoff contention.

The Winters Lady Blizzards closed out their district schedule with a hard fought 32-30 win over the Irion County Lady Hornets last Tuesday. The win clinched third place for Winters and, combined with Ozona’s win over Miles, eliminated Irion County from playoff contention.

With their season on the line, the Lady Hornets jumped out to an early 15-9 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Winters did a better job of containing Irion County’s two six-foot post players, outscored the Lady Hornets, 11-4, and took a 20-19 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, the Lady Blizzards held Irion County to two points, while scoring seven, to make the score 27-21 going into the final period. In the fourth quarter, Irion County battled back to take a 29-27 lead with 4:20 left in the game.

A free throw by Skyar Lee cut the lead to one. Then, after a missed Lady Blizzards’ shot, Monique Carrillo got the rebound and scored to give Winters a 30-29 lead with 3:15 minutes left. Seconds later, Carrillo took a full court pass from Aimee Green and scored a breakaway layup for Winters’ final points. The final two minutes were a defensive struggle, as Irion County managed two free throws for the final, 32-30, margin. Carrillo led all scorers with 18 points. Karlee Busher had six points and six rebounds. Cha-Cha Lovelace had five assists and five rebounds, while Green finished with five points. Marley Smith picked up four steals.

In the JV game, the JV Lady Blizzards picked up their 10th win of the season, 31-29. Jezebel Gonzalez had 13 points, while Sugar Hunter had six.

The varsity win improves Winters’ record to 20-13 on the year and 7-5 in district play. Winters will now face the Hamlin Lady Pipers, who placed second in District 8-2A. The bi-district playoff game will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Tuscola.
