BALLINGER – Menard ran past Miles 52-20 on Friday night in a Class 2A Division II bi-district football game at Bearcat Stadium in Ballinger.

Menard improved to 9-2 and will play Lindsay in the area round next Friday or Saturday in Cisco. Lindsay (8-2) is ranked No. 10 by Texas Football Magazine.

Menard running back Christian Salazar ran himself ragged as the Yellowjackets’ offensive line opened up big holes against the Bulldog defensive front. At one point he was treated for leg cramps on the warm-for-November evening.

"Miles has a lot of size, and when we played them earlier this year, there were times they owned the line," Wilhelm said. "We stressed this week that we need to get back to doing that, kind of setting the tone up there."

It was the second victory this year over Miles for the Yellowjackets, who beat the Bulldogs 27-6 in nondistrict action in Miles.

For the Bulldogs, injuries have plagued them, head coach Chad Currie said.

"We fought hard but we've had one of those years where injuries have killed us," Currie said. "We lost five games by eight points or less this year. Tonight, secondary-wise, my first five starters were out so we're playing kids in positions they've never played before.

"I'm extremely proud of how they fought. They went all-in."

Miles ended its season at 2-9.

Menard scored four times in the fourth quarter -- despite having several with cramping problems -- to take what was a close game and make it a blowout.

Menard stopped Miles on its first drive and took a 7-0 lead when Salazar scored from 4 yards out with 3:32 to play in the first quarter.

On Miles’ very next play from scrimmage, Menard’s Brody Baugh stepped in front of the receiver and returned the interception 27 yards to give the Yellowjackets a 14-0 lead with 3:14 to play in the first quarter.

After a mostly scoreless second quarter, Menard got a big defensive stop on Miles’ best possession at that point in the game. On the next play, Salazar broke through the middle for an 85-yard TD to give Menard a 20-0 lead with 2:39 to play before halftime.

Miles finally got on the board after a long pass reception by Noel Sanchez set the Bulldogs up on the Menard 2-yard line, where Miles’ quarterback Jared Flores scored with 47 seconds left on the clock before halftime.

Mason Bryan’s PAT pass to Leroy Garcia pulled the Bulldogs to within 20-8.

Miles stopped the Yellowjackets from scoring on the subsequent possession to go into halftime trailing by 13.
