The Amarillo Police Department's SWAT unit responded to an elderly man's mental health crisis Saturday night, according to the police department.

At 9:08 p.m., the Amarillo police was called to the 3700 block of Harmony Street by a 76-year-old man having a mental health situation and threatening to commit suicide. Police negotiators were called to the scene and were talking to the subject on the phone, according to the APD.

The man refused to come out of the home. The department's SWAT unit used a "diversionary device and was then able to safely take the subject into custody," the news release stated.

The man was transported to an area hospital for a full evaluation.
