During the Christmas season, I wanted to give a little insight into the celebrations related to nursing homes. Any holiday is special to most residents; however, Christmas is especially meaningful. A time of seeing family and friends that often only come to visit on this holiday.

During the Christmas season, I wanted to give a little insight into the celebrations related to nursing homes. Any holiday is special to most residents; however, Christmas is especially meaningful. A time of seeing family and friends that often only come to visit on this holiday.

The nursing facilities usually provide a celebration time about a week before the actual Christmas Day. Very few residents can leave the facility for in home celebrations. The facility staff will make efforts to provide extra activities with a holiday theme. Local retail establishments will also participate with an Angel Tree.

The Angel Tree provides gifts for many residents who don’t have a family to celebrate with them. Area churches also provide gifts and refreshments for the residents. The holiday season inspires organizations to go above and beyond their regular commitments to the elderly. The staff of the nursing facility often adopt a resident that does not have an active family support.

Letters, gifts, and Christmas presents are delivered daily by various means such as USPS, UPS, & Fed Ex. Most residents are very surprised and pleases to receive these gifts. Many are just as happy to be remembered.

Please put the nursing home on your calendar for next year. Every visit is appreciated and especially on a holiday.

I started my nursing home career in 1988. I retired in 2015 and have been doing interim positions since retirement. I have been married 39 years and have three children and 4 grandchildren. I love what I do and I love the residents and staff of all the facility in which I have had the pleasure of working. Once I thought my calling was to become a missionary. I found my calling as an administrator in nursing facilities. I have been able to comfort many residents and families during the last 30 years in long term care.

Tom Killingsworth is the interim administrator of Central Texas Nursing and Rehab in Ballinger. The Health and Wellness Coalition of Runnels County is comprised of health care professionals throughout the county. Members meet on the first Thursday of the first full week of the month.
