WAXAHACHIE — The Southwestern Assemblies of God University volleyball team defeated University of Science and Arts in three quick sets (25-9, 25-11, 25-4), winning the Sooner Athletic Conference Co-Conference Championship in the process. They then added a conference tournament win to the ledger.
The Lady Lions shared the conference title with Oklahoma City University.
The Lady Lions concluded their conference season with a win, and it was one of the most successful seasons they’ve seen in a while. SAGU finished 25-5 overall and 16-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Lady Lions finished this season ranked No. 16 in Division I in digs per match (18) and No. 32 in Division I in kills per match (13).
“Today was a very special day for SAGU volleyball. We honored three special seniors. All three have impacted my life in so many ways. Their hard work and dedication has made our volleyball program what it is today. Paulyae Dawkins, Summer Skillern, and Jessica Sodich have stayed the course and worked their tails off. I’m so proud of them. We are Co-Conference champs! What a great accomplishment for our program,” said an excited SAGU head coach Hank Moore.
The Lady Lions got off to a 9-1 run against the Lady Drover’s and never looked back. Senior Summer Skillern led the Lady Lions with 15 kills and two blocks. Paulyae Dawkins followed with 13 kills and three blocks. Jessica Sodich and Kali Shaw both added eight kills. Sophia Ivy had 39 assists and Celi Bruce had 19 digs.
Outside hitter Dana Stepankova led the Lady Drover’s with four kills.
The Lady Lions then swept St. Gregory’s University in three sets on Tuesday, 25-21, 25-17, 25-13.
The Lady Lions came out aggressive in the first set. Jessica Sodich, who led the Lady Lions in kills, hammered the first two kills of the set. In the second set, the Lady Lions and the Cavaliers had a back and forth battle in the second set with the Lady Lions edging out St. Gregory's. The third set was the quickest and the most intense for SAGU. There were several extensive rallies in this set, which made for an exciting game for SAGU fans to be involved.
Jessica Sodich had eight kills, 17 digs and two blocks. Paulyae Dawkins had eight kills and four blocks. Kali Shaw added seven kills, 11 digs, and one block. Mollie McBride also had seven kills and four blocks. Sophia Ivy had 33 assists and Celi Bruce led the Lady Lions in digs with 23.
The Lady Lions will compete against Texas Wesleyan University at 4:30 pm Friday, November 10, 2017. The semifinal round will be hosted at Oklahoma City University.
