BALLINGER - The Main Street Soda Fountain is one of the “go to” lunch spots in Ballinger and has been for almost 20 years.

Main Street Soda Fountain was selected as the Business of the Month for October by the Ballinger Area Chamber of Commerce. The Business of the Month receives a banner and special plugs from the Chamber via social media.

Owners Misty and David Ueckert, say they are delighted with the success of Ballinger’s premier spot where folks can get sandwiches, salads, hamburgers, daily specials and much more.

The current location is at 701 Hutchings Avenue on the Corner of U.S. 67 and U.S. 83.

The Ueckerts are very proud of the building they are in too and when folks visit Main Street, they can get the whole story on the building because it is written up on the menu. Main Street Soda Fountain is located at 701 Hutchings Ave. in a building built in 1905 by C.S. Miller, president of Ballinger State Bank & Trust. It would serve in many other capacities over the years, until the Ueckerts purchased it in 1996.

With the help of many folks and businesses in the community, the building was remodeled and refurbished and today, houses the entire restaurant.

David Ueckert said before committing to the present day restaurant, he and Misty had a clothing store at 806 Hutchins, but in 1998, they moved into the building they are in now and haven’t looked back.

“When we first moved, Misty just wanted a small cold sandwich and ice cream shop in the back room where the cash register is now,” David explained. At the time, they still had a boutique on the other side.

In 2001, they went out of the clothing and gift business and devoted the entire business to food.

“People eat,” David said. “They don't always have to buy clothes.”

And so it goes. Prior to opening up as a full time restaurant, they had to update the kitchen and add a vent hood and other equipment.

“We turned the whole thing into a restaurant and expanded the menu,” David said.

He said some of the recipes came from Dan and Kerry Morelock who also had a soda shop and others like the quiche, came from Kay Rieken, who ran the Tea Room in Curiosities for several years.

“She helped develop some of the hot plate lunches and desserts,” Davis said.

Both Misty and David are Ballinger natives as are generations of their family. Misty is a 1983 graduate of Ballinger High School and David graduated in 1985. Their parents are also BHS grads. Misty is a first grade teacher at Ballinger Elementary and David counts himself as the “chief cook and bottle washer.”

The restaurant stays packed every day at lunch time - and the Ueckerts are very thankful for that.

“We want to thank everyone for their support,” David said. “We truly appreciate it.”

David runs the restaurant full time, with three other full time and two part time employees. The Main Street Soda Fountain is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers in-house catering.
