Zakkary Ottmers, a 2017 graduate of Ballinger High School, received a significant award for his Division I (Superior) performance at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, held in May at Kelly Lane Middle School in Pflugerville.

Zakkary Ottmers, a 2017 graduate of Ballinger High School, received a significant award for his Division I (Superior) performance at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, held in May at Kelly Lane Middle School in Pflugerville.

On June 7, Ottmers received a letter from Dr. Bradley N. Kent, UIL State Director of Music, informing him that he was being recognized as an Outstanding Performer. Ottmers received the draped medal medallion awarded to state champions in all UIL events.

Of the approximately 25,000 musicians who performed at the state competition, only two to three percent of the solo performances earned this distinction.

"This award culminates a tremendous high school career for Zakkary, salutatorian of his class, and outstanding in many areas, and the first student in recent history to be named to the Texas Small Schools All-State Choir this past spring," said Dale Ellis, who heads the choral department at BHS.

Ottmers, a 2017 graduate of Ballinger High School, is the son of Eric and Starr Sims, was a member of the Ballinger High School Vocal Music Program and has served as Co-Drum Major for the Ballinger Bearcat Band during his last two years and trumpet section leader all four years. Ottmers was active in band, theater arts, speech, and choir during his time at Ballinger High School.

Ottmers’ academic performance throughout his high school career was deeemed exceptional. He was salutatorian of the Class of 2017, a member of the National Honor Society and received several Who’s Who and Academic Honor Awards, including a Rotary Youth Leadership Award in 2016. In speaking events, Ottmers qualified for state in Extemporaneous Speaking and CX Debate, taking seventh place at State in Extemporaneous Speaking his sophomore and junior years. His theater arts record included leading roles his junior and senior years in the UIL One Act Plays ”Death of a Salesman” where he played the lead role of Biff, and “Reckless” where he played the role of Lloyd. He also played Captain Von Trapp in “The Sound of Music” and Don Lockwood in “Singing in the Rain.”

Ottmer's high school career culminated in numerous scholarships. He is attending Texas State University in San Marcos.
